Vincent Edward Jackson popularly known as Bo Jackson is an athlete and a former sports professional of US. Jackson was a multi-sport professional with active interest in American football and baseball.
Born on November 30, 1962 in Bessemer, Alabama, Jackson was the eighth of ten children. Vincent Jackson got his name from his mother’s favorite actor “Vince Edwards”. His family used to call him "wild boar," as he had a taste for inviting trouble. That eventually stuck altered as "Bo."
The Yankees selected Bo in 1982 in the MLB draft but he decided to attend University in Auburn on a sports scholarship. There he shone as an athletic sportsperson in American football as well as baseball. Just for the sake of it he had an Adult Education graduation degree from the University.
Jackson was first selected in the NFL Draft in the year 1986 for the team of Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Later Bo Jackson was asked to choose either football or baseball; Bo Jackson opted to sign Kansas City Royal instead. Al Davis, owner of Raiders offered him a good salary however utilized him part time till the end of baseball season.
Bo Jackson had an impressive record of 2,782 runs and sixteen touchdowns averaging 5.4 “Yards per run.” Bo Jackson also forty passes caught against three hundred and fifty-two yards and two touchdowns in his four seasons in the NFL. From 1989 Jackson ventured outside the realms of sport and earned fame through "Bo Knows" advertising campaign and many advertisements for Nike promoting a cross-training athletic shoe.
Till the 80’s noteworthy among his achievements were being an AL All-Star (1989), MVP All Star Game (1989), four 20-Home Run Seasons: (1987–1990), one 30-Home Run Season (1989) and one 100 RBI Season (1989). In 1993 Bo was honored with AL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
In 1991, Bo had a career threatening injury when an accident, involving Kevin Walker who was the linebacker, occurred in an attempted tackle. This injury marked the end of his football career and the baseball career plummeted into an uncertain phase. Bo Jackson was diagnosed to be ailing with avascular necrosis, which ultimately was cured through a hip replacement surgery.
Bo Jackson resumed his baseball career in 1993. At his first at-bat, against the New York Yankees; he scored homerun on his first swing. Bo Jackson avenged his discontinuation from sports by hitting sixteen home runs and forty-five RBIs during the season. During Bo’s association with White Sox, no bases were stolen against his name. Before retiring, Bo Jackson was contracted by California Angels for an ultimate season of his career; he scored thirteen home runs in 201 at bats, for the final season of his career.
In 1993, Jackson was honored with the Tony Conigliaro Award. Bo Jackson later tried acting in the movies with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Married with Children. Jackson served as the President of the HealthSouth Sports Medicine Council.
Jackson was honored by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in 2005 World Series game. In 2006, Jackson took part in the Spike TV sports reality show, Pros vs. Joes. The amateur athletes were easily defeated in the home run-hitting contest.
In 2007, Bo started a self titled “Elite Sports Complex” in association of John Cangelosi. It is an 88,000 square foot sports facility in Lockport, Illinois. He partly owns and also serves as CEO of the facility.
Bo Jackson currently lives in Burr Ridge, Illinois with his family.
